Days of the Week

In the German language, the names of the days of the week have a cultural and etymological heritage that reflects the influence of various historical traditions.

1. Monday in German is "Montag," derived from the ancient Germanic Mānandag, which refers to the Germanic god of the Moon.

2. Tuesday, Dienstag, finds its origin in the Germanic god of war and justice, Tyr or Tiu.

3. While the previous ones refer to Germanic gods, Wednesday, Mittwoch, refers to the middle of the week, as its German word Mitte suggests.

4. Thursday, Donnerstag, again finds its origin in the god of thunder.

5. Freitag, which is Friday in German, owes its name to the first of the Valkyries: Freyja or Freya.

6. Saturday comes from the Germanic sambaztag, meaning a day of rest, and in contemporary German, it is called Samstag.

7. Finally, Sunday, Sonntag, gets its name in honor of the sun, which in German is called Sonne.
