Winter sports

Skiing, bobsleigh, ice skating… The list of sports that come with the snow is long. What are the most popular winter sports in Germany?

Bobsleigh

It is most people’s favorite sport after heavy snowfall. This vehicle has skis or blades instead of wheels. It is gravity-powered, and that is the reason why it is very popular when people want to go down small hills. One of the longest and prettiest iced tracks in Germany can be found in Blomberg. This vertiginous ride starts at the mountain station, leaves the refugee behind, goes through the snowy forest —as if it were a dream— and it arrives at the valley station.

Skiing

This is the ideal sport if you want to “feel” nature’s majesty in high peaks. Some people practice this sport to observe nature and others do it to feel the adrenaline rush. There are more than 15 snowy areas in Germany. The best ski areas are near the Bavarian alps, more specifically around the highest peak, the formidable Zugspitze (2.996 meters above sea level) which has a famous cable car. There are two main types of skiing: the first one is alpine. Its main objective is to go down as quickly as possible. The other one is cross-country skiing. People cross long distances in order to achieve the shortest time possible with their own effort because there are no descents.

Ice skating

Water in many lakes and rivers freezes from time to time when winter comes. This allows people to use them as skating rinks. On top of that, when December arrives, Christmas markets also come and bring artificial ice rinks. This is a time to enjoy the holiday spirit with a Christmas tree in the background.
