Spending time with friends and family outdoors is an ideal plan during the summer in Germany. The barbecue is the main protagonist.

When summer holidays arrive, people try to enjoy outdoor activities as much as they can in Germany. Mitja Lüderwaldt, Director of the Oberstufe section and the Bilingual International Baccalaureate -GIB- remembers that “summer is the perfect season for barbecues” and he says that sausages are what you most commonly find on the grill. “It’s the ideal time to hang out with family and friends”. In fact, he explains, that every house has a grill in their backyard or on their balcony, and it becomes an element of fun in July and August every year.

Nowadays, besides sausages, people grill hamburgers, beef, pork, chicken and fish such as salmon and trout. “Halloumi is very popular too. It is a special Greek cheese that’s prepared on the grill”. Vegetables such as zucchini, paprika, tomatoes or eggplants are commonly used too as well as sauces such as homemade mustard and curry.

Currywurst Sauce

This is an excellent preparation of very common street food in Berlin. This sauce goes with meat or grilled sausages.

Ingredients

  • 1 small or medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • ½ cup of apple puree
  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • 5 tablespoons of curry
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

  1. Heat a little bit of olive oil in a saucepan. Add finely chopped onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes. Add tomatoes (with juice) and the tablespoon of sugar. Let that cook for a few minutes.
  2. Add apple puree and vinegar, mustard, and curry. Add salt and pepper to taste and stir well.
  3. Cook on low heat until tomatoes are broken down. Blend and put everything back into the saucepan until you get the right consistency.

The most common way to enjoy Currywurst is to cut the sausages into thick slices and then serve them with the sauce on a shared plate or on an individual plate.

Guten Appetit!
