Germany is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world. In 2021, they manufactured 3.1 million vehicles.

Today, the automotive industry is one of the biggest sources of employment in Germany. It is thought that cars originated in this country. Karl Benz and Nikolaus Otto were pioneers in this industry. They developed a four-stroke internal-combustion engine in the late 1870s. And they adapted Benz’s designs to a chariot in 1887. This is the predecessor of current cars. In 1901, Germany produced around 900 cars a year. In 1926, Daimler-Benz was created by merging the predecessor companies from Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. That is how they produced cars under the brand Mercedes-Benz. BMW was founded in 1916.

These are the most popular German car brands:

  • Audi

  • Mercedes-Benz

  • BMW
